Wedding & Catering Packaging Guide for Tamil Nadu & Kerala Caterers (2026)

Good catering packaging decides how your food reaches the guest. Whether you buy from local catering packaging suppliers or order online, the right catering food containers keep wedding parcels neat. At a wedding, a house-warming or a temple function, caterers in Tamil Nadu and Kerala now pack hundreds of parcels in a few hours – biryani for relatives who leave early, sweets for return gifts, and curries for the family after the main event.

This guide explains which containers suit each dish, how many to order for a function, and how to keep parcels leak-free. In addition, it covers simple checks that help you choose a reliable supplier before the wedding season starts.

Why Catering Packaging Matters at Weddings and Functions

A wedding meal is remembered for its taste, but a parcel is remembered for how it arrives. If gravy leaks inside a guest’s car or a sweet box gets crushed, the family remembers the caterer, not the packaging brand. Therefore, the right catering packaging protects your reputation as much as your food.

Parcels have also become a normal part of functions in Madurai, Coimbatore, Chennai, Kochi and Thrissur. Guests who cannot stay for the full meal, elderly relatives at home and the bride’s and groom’s families after the event all expect neatly packed food.

• Leak-proof lids keep gravies, sambar and payasam inside during travel.
• Stackable containers save space in vans and on serving tables.
• Clear or uniform colors make the parcel look clean and professional.
• Food-grade material keeps hot food safe for the guest.

Best Catering Food Containers for Each Wedding Dish

Most wedding menus in Tamil Nadu and Kerala follow a familiar pattern: rice or biryani, two or three curries, a dry side, sweets and a dessert. As a result, you can plan catering food containers by dish type rather than by event.

Rectangle containers for rice and biryani

Rectangle containers pack rice-based dishes neatly and stack well in cartons and vans. Our 750 ml rectangle container is the most-ordered size for a single biryani portion, and it comes in black, white or transparent so you can match the look of the event. For more help, see our biryani container sizes guide.

Round containers for gravies and payasam

Liquid dishes need a round container with a firm snap lid. For example, a 500 ml round container suits a family’s portion of sambar or chicken curry, while the 250 ml round container works for payasam and side gravies.

PET boxes for sweets and return gifts

Return-gift sweets look best in a transparent box. Because PET containers are crystal clear, guests can see the ladoo or halwa inside without opening the lid. The 500 ml PET container is a popular size for a mixed sweet box.

How Much Catering Packaging to Order for a Function

Order quantities depend on how many guests take a parcel, not on the total guest count. Ask the family how many parcels they expect – for example, relatives who leave early, elders at home and the take-home food for both families – and then add a buffer.

A simple way to plan catering packaging is to count parcels first, then multiply by the number of containers in each parcel.

1. Count the parcels. For example, a wedding with 200 parcel requests needs 200 sets.
2. List the containers per set. A typical set might be one 750 ml biryani box, one 500 ml gravy container, one 100 ml raita cup and one sweet box.
3. Multiply and add 10% extra. Spare containers cover breakages, double portions and last-minute requests.
4. Order by the carton. Containers are sold in full cartons, so round up to the nearest carton for each size.
5. Order early in the season. Wedding months are busy, therefore place your order a week or two before the function.

Catering Packaging Tips for Hot Food and Long Travel

Even the best catering food containers need the right packing method. These simple habits keep parcels neat from the kitchen to the guest’s table.

• Let steam settle for a minute before closing lids on very hot rice, so water drops do not collect inside.
• Fill gravies below the rim so the snap lid closes fully and does not lift during travel.
• Pack wet and dry dishes separately – keep sambar away from fried items so they stay crisp.
• Use one container colour per dish type, for example black for biryani and transparent for sides, to speed up packing and serving.
• Label parcels for vegetarian and non-vegetarian food when both are served at the same function.
• Carry cartons upright in the van and avoid stacking heavy cartons on gravy parcels.

Catering Packaging Rules in Tamil Nadu and Kerala

Tamil Nadu bans many use-and-throw plastic items, such as plastic carry bags, plastic plates and plastic sheets used to wrap food. However, rigid food containers with lids are widely used for parcels. In both states, food packaging should be food grade, clean and hygienic, in line with FSSAI packaging requirements.

Because rules can change, check the latest local guidance before a large event. In practice, most caterers use food-grade PP containers for hot food and paper or cloth bags to carry the parcels.

How to Choose Catering Packaging Suppliers

The wedding season leaves no time for supply problems. Therefore, compare catering packaging suppliers on the points below, not only on price.

• Stock in the sizes you need – rice, gravy, side and sweet containers from one supplier.
• Consistent lid fit across cartons, so every parcel closes the same way.
• Clear carton quantities so you can calculate cost per function.
• Reliable delivery – for bulky cartons, lorry (transport shed) delivery usually costs less than courier.
• Local support from a supplier who understands Tamil Nadu and Kerala menus.
